  • When you run a program in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Data Execution Prevention – Microsoft Windows
To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.
    Name: program name
    Publisher: program publisher

    What is Data Execution Prevention?

Data Execution Prevention (DEP for short) is a "feature" of Microsoft Windows. Unfortunately it is a bit far from its intent of preventing damage from viruses or other security threats. Most of the time, it just annoys the hell out of you. Anyway, if you have an antivirus, firewall and Mozilla Firefox you can turn it off without giving it a second thought.

    How to turn it off

    1. Start > Control Panel >System>Advanced Tab

    spark020

2.Find the item marked Performance right under there is a button that says Settings

3.Click the Data Execution Prevention Tab

    spark018

4.You will see two option that says “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except  those I select”

    5. Click the ‘Add’ button. You have to find where the file “explorer.exe” resides on your computer, most of the time it’s something like this C:\Windows\Explorer.exe , anyway add explorer to that list

    spark021

It will  give you a warning ,just ignore it and click OK.

The you reboot and if you try  it everything should work just fine.
