Google Tightens Gmail Security
After Chinese hackers broke into Google's services, it has tightened up Gmail encryption. All Gmail accounts will automatically be set in an "https" mode. HTTPS encryption keeps your mail secure as it travels between your web browser and Gmail servers.This added layer of security can make Gmail slower, so if you don't use unencrypted wireless connections, you can choose to disable this option in your account Settings. Even if you change this setting, Gmail will always encrypt the login page to protect your password. If you trust the security of your network, you can turn this feature off at any time.
To disable or re-enable this feature in Gmail:
1.Sign in to Gmail.
2.Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
3.Set 'Browser Connection' to 'Don't use https' or 'Always use https.'
4.Click Save Changes.
5.Manually change the URL to http://mail.google.com to start accessing Gmail via http.
The shift to the more secure setting began late Tuesday, just a few hours after Chinese hackers attacks. Google is now considering pulling out of China and shutting down its search engine there because of the attacks.
If you’re more interested in speed than security, you can switch off HTTPS in the Gmail settings menu.

GMail Labs 'Got the Wrong Bob'
This has happened to us accidently , when we are composing an email in a hurry. In GMail when you type in email addresses,it auto-suggests recipients as you go. Seeing a familiar first name, you hit "Tab" to accept the suggestion and move on.When you want to send an email to your friend but accidentally the email goes to the wrong person of the same name.
To avoid this type of problems Gmail Labs came up with new lab feature to check whether you have include a wrong person to the email. It has brought out the 'Got the Wrong Bob' feature. Basically, if you have contacts with similar first or second name, this feature helps you verify if it is the correct contact.It will automatically check if you've added different contacts by mistake. For instance, if instead of adding Bijeesh Pallikkalakam, you added Bijeesh using the Autocomplete feature, this new feature will point it out.
To activate this feature go to Settings –> Labs and look for “ Got the wrong Bob? ” and “Don’t forget Bob” and then click on Enable.You can use both the features in conjunction to avoid any misfires in future.

Google Adds Robust Task Management to Gmail
Google had introduced an experimental feature dubbed Tasks for Gmail through Gmail Labs six months back. Now, this experimental Task feature has come out of Labs and is available to all Gmail account holders by default.
Tasks is a Gmail feature designed to help you keep track of the things you need to do. You can create lists of items, set due dates and notes, and even add Gmail messages directly to Tasks.
You can access this feature in two ways: either click on the "Tasks" link below "Contacts" to open a Gmail Chat-like dialog or create a task from an email by opening "More Actions" drop-down and selecting "Add to Tasks". When you convert an email to a task, Gmail keeps the message's subject and places a link to the mail.You can also easily convert emails into tasks: select one or more messages and go to More Actions > Add to Tasks
Useful Shortcuts
* Open the tasks box by typing g then k if you have keyboard shortcuts enabled.
* Create a task from an email by pressing Shift+T if you have keyboard shortcuts enabled.
* Navigate between tasks using the arrows.
* Delete a task by deleting the text and hitting backspace.
* Organize your tasks by indenting them — just hit Tab to indent and Shift+Tab to un-indent.
* Ctrl+Up moves a task up the list and Ctrl+Down move it down.
* Hit Shift+Enter when in a task to show its details

Gmail Labels Get Drag and Drop & Other Improvements
Google has added a number of updates to the way labels work in GMail.
1.New location for labels
Now your labels are now above your chat list, grouped together with Inbox, Drafts, Chats and other system labels.
2) Label hiding and showing
Google has minimized the number of labels that appear in the default list as to not push the chat bar down too far.You now have more control over your labels.Label hiding is new feature, which automatically showing the labels you use most and hiding the rest.You can show, hide, or delete a label by clicking the down-arrow to the left of that label.
3.Drag and drop
You can now drag messages into labels, just like you can with folders. This means that if you want to label a mail, you can simply drag and drop it over the label in your left sidebar and you’re done.This will allow me greater Inbox maintenance.
The best part about the labels is that with the new changes they're becoming more folder like.

Gmail Intros New Lab - Automatic Message Translation
If you receive a message in a language you can't read, you can let Gmail translate it.For this simply enable the "Message Translation" from the Labs tab under Settings.When Gmail detects one of your messages is in a language other than your default language, you'll see a header at the top of the message.
Click the link that says Translate message to.... Your message will be translated inline (no need to open a new tab or window). Or if you want to translate the message and print it too, you can click the down arrow next to the Reply button and select Translate and print.
You can also translate an entire conversation. Just click the globe icon on the right side of the conversation and you're good to go.
If you want to translate to any other language from the default language, you can change your default language in general settings tab.

GMail Labs Lets Users Insert Images into GMail
Gmail Labs now offers embedding images into emails.You can upload the files which
In order to insert an image you'll have to have "rich formatting" turned on. Once it is, you should notice an image icon squeezed between the emoticon and link icons. Click it and you can upload an image to post in the body of your message. That's it.
Gmail doesn't show URL-based images in messages by default to protect you from spammers, so if you're sending mail to other Gmail users, they'll still have to click "Display images below" or "Always display images from ..." to see images you embed.

How do I Trace the Email Origin of the Sender
Every email comes with headers that carry important information that can tell where the email was sent from and possibly who sent it.For that, you would need to find the IP address of the sender.Some technical details require to track the IP address of an email.
The IP address is generally found in the headers enclosed between square brackets; for eg:[87.237.198.194]
Finding IP address in GMail
1. Log into your GMail account and open the email , which one you want to know the IP Adress
2. Click on the Reply link. Choose Show Original from the list.
It will open a window like the following .Press Ctrl+F to search ‘Received from’.There may be many “Received from” and those are IP addresses of all of servers involved in routing that email to you.
To find the first computer that originally sent the email, you’ll have to select the last one.Here you can see IP address is 87.237.198.194

How to Add Location in Gmail email Signatures
Gmail will now let you add location details to your email signature.To try it, turn on Location in Signature from the Labs tab under Settings, then go to your signature preferences and check the box next to "Append your location to the signature."
It will make use of your public IP address to determine your location, so it may not always be that accurate. Make sure your browser has a version of Gears that supports the location module for more accurate location detection.
Step 1: Login your Gmail inbox. Click in Settings -> Labs and scroll down to locate “Location in Signature”.Check “Enable” to enable this feature.
Step 2: Open the Setting tab of Gmail and select the check box "Append your location to the signature".
This feature is particularly helpful to those users who need to frequently travel around the world.

How to Embed an Image Into GMAIL
Now you will click on browse and look for the Image on your computer or from the Web that you wish to send ,once you find the image click on it and then click open ,your image url will show up in the upload space next to the Browse button,next you will click on the insert image button at the bottom of the dialogue box .
Next you will Copy this image by selecting it Ctrl A and then copying it Ctrl C or right click and copy.You will then come back into your Gmail and click on Compose Mail and a new e-mail message will open.Paste ( Ctrl v ) your image into the body of your email message . Once you have done that you can now attach the file that coincides with your preview that you would like to share with your groups.
