Shared Access Computing With Windows SteadyState

  • Wednesday, November 4, 2009
  • Runtrailblog
  • Creating several user accounts on a common PC is annoying: You want to work quickly, yet at the same time keep logging on to individual accounts separately for configuring special settings. Instead, you can do all that centrally as well as be able to use an existing account as a template for other accounts.

In a shared PC you may face following threats

    • Hard disk filled with downloaded files
    • Strange options configured
    • Programs installed that you don't want
    • System infected with viruses and spyware
    • Computer bogged down for unknown reasons

You can manage user accounts centrally with Microsoft’s SteadyState. With this you can manage whole groups of users as single user accounts. On the right side of the window, all user accounts set up on the system are listed under ‘User Settings’ with the exception of the one that is currently being used. Click on the desired account. You can now access the account settings via the ‘General’, ‘Windows Restrictions’,‘Feature Restrictions’ and ‘Block Programs’ tabs. Options that cannot be accessed directly have been explained in the English manual that can be downloaded from here

    11-4-2009 8-41-48 AM

    11-4-2009 8-27-14 AM

Using Windows SteadyState has another advantage: You can use existing accounts as templates. To do this, follow the ‘Export User’ link on the home page. In the following dialog, enter a name under ‘File name’ under which you want to store the account profile as a template. It has the file extension ‘.SSU’. Then select the account under ‘User name’ and click on ‘Import User’. In the next dialog, select the SSU file and click on ‘Open’. You can now define the name and also a password for the new user account. Confirm this information and click ‘OK’.

  • Storage amount is lacking and upgrading costs money
  • Reluctance to share private photos with the world

Then try GPhotospace.  Adding the GPhotoSpace extension to your Firefox install provides you with a solution that's just as easy as using "send to: email recipient" in Windows. The process is quick, easy, and you don’t require any technical knowledge. Once you’ve installed the addon, you can open it by clicking the status bar icon

    Features

    • Free .
    • Super Fast – This Firefox extension allows you to seamlessly batch upload up to 50 photos faster than any web-based uploader.
    • Lots of Storage – Most free photo-sharing sites provide little storage. Upgrading costs money. GPhotospace leverages the 7GB+ of space offered for free by Gmail to provide reliable hosting.
    • Secure Sharing – Sharing using most photo sites exposes your photos to the world. But perhaps you are only looking to share with friends and family. GPhotospace only shares your photos and albums with whom you choose. You have 100% control of your privacy.
         spark006

The interface is extremely simple. Create a new album, describe it, add photos, and save it. The only adjustment you can make is the size of photos to share: 320/640/1024/1536 pixels. Make sure you change this setting if you want to upload full-size digital images, as it defaults to 640 pixels.

How to access MS office files online?

  • Friday, June 27, 2008
  • Runtrailblog
  • Office Live Workspace is an online space provided by Microsoft for saving, accessing, and sharing documents and files. Using it one can access his / her documents from anywhere over an Internet connection via Web browser. This tool can be used for grouping information for work, school, and personal projects.

Office Live Workspace emphasizes collaboration rather than composition. To share documents with other people, you can send them a secure URL without requiring them to sign in with a Windows Live ID. Everyone with access to the workspace can make and view each others' comments.

Those invited for editing can make changes to the work, as long as they have Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on their hard drive. Office Live Workspace handily preserves the Track Changes feature from Office apps while also keeping five histories of a file. And the Share View screen allows control of another user's PC

    hs_OLW_iconic

    Access files from anywhere
    • Access documents from almost any computer with a Web browser
    • No more flash drives - documents are there when and where you need them
    • Password-protected document sharing; you control who can view and edit your work
    Work with programs you know
    • Save over 1,000 Microsoft Office documents in one online place
    • Open and save files directly from familiar programs like Word, Excel, and Power Point
    • Synchronize contact, task, and event lists with Outlook
    • One just needs to sign up and and get a Windows live ID to start using it. The web interface of Live Workspace is very well designed, making it very easy to use. One can create office documents on their machines and directly save them in the provided Web space (using .NET passport).

Another great feature of this workspace is proper management of different versions of the same document. This helps in better understanding of content and even enables one to rollback to a previous version if required.

    Drop.io- Simple private sharing.

  • Saturday, June 21, 2008
  • Runtrailblog
  • This new online file sharing service extends the concept of sharing files to include email, phone messages and even sending and receiving faxes, though the latter is currently USA only. No registration is required and it's totally free. A lot to like here. It is decidedly different in approach than the other file sharing services currently available.

    SparksSpace013

Drop.io enables you to create simple private exchange points called drops. A drop is a chunk of space you can use to store and share anything privately (pictures, videos, audio, and documents), without accounts, registration, or an email address. Drops are not 'searchable' and not 'networked'; they just exist online as private points for exchange between individuals or groups.

How to Hide a Shared Folder in Windows

  • Wednesday, April 23, 2008
  • Runtrailblog
  • If you want to prevent other users on your network from accessing your shared data but still want to be able to get to it yourself over the network here is how you do it.

    1. Right click the folder or disk you want to be secured and choose Sharing and Security

    2. Add a ‘$‘ to the end of the folder name (without the single quotes). For example if the folder name is SparksSpace, rename it to SparksSpace$.The name can be up to 12 characters long (including the dollar sign).

    SparksSpace004 arrow   SparksSpace007

    3. Now you can share the folder and people who know about the folder can use it.That folder is now hidden and won't be visible by any other user on your network, nor will it appear in My Network Places or Network Neighborhood. Only by knowing the name of the folder can others access it.

Now how can it be accessed?

  • Double click My Computer and go to Tools/Map Network Drive.
  • Choose an available drive letter and type the path for your hidden folder (with the dollar sign included).
  • Put a checkmark next to Reconnect at Logon, which will automatically map your hidden share every time you boot up
  •

    SparksSpace008

    • Click Finish (Note! If you choose not to reconnect at logon, you will have to manually re-map your share after every reboot).

    Access Your PC From Anywhere

  • Saturday, April 19, 2008

Simply install LogMeIn on the computer you want to access. Once you install the software on a PC, you can access that machine from almost any browser on the Web.

When accessing a remote system, you can freely navigate its OS as if you were sitting in front of it. You can move icons, run applications, open files, and change settings. The app is wonderfully fast when used over a broadband connection, (there's only a slight lag time whenever you open or close a window), and you can easily grant remote access to other users.

LogMeIn is available for Windows and Macintosh. The only downside is that it doesn't allow you to transfer files between PCs; for that you need one of the paid versions of LogMeIn.

    syncBig

To activate it, you need to:-

    1. create logmein account
    2. login to your account and add your computer through “Add Computer” option
    3. install necessary free application for your PC
    4. leave logmein running and PC connected to the web if you plan to acceess it from outside
    5. sign in into your account on the logmein.com from anywhere and remote access service should show your pc’s screen in the browser.
    6. make sure to logout once you are done
