  • When you click an Internet shortcut in a Microsoft Outlook Express e-mail message, your Web browser may not start or may not connect to the Web page. This issue may occur if any of the following conditions is true:

    • Microsoft Internet Explorer is not currently your default Internet browser, and the browser that was the default browser is no longer installed.
    • A short file name (standard 8.3 naming) is used for the program name that is associated with Internet shortcuts.
    • After uninstalling another web browser such as Firefox or Netscape; or another email program like Incredimail, you may find that clicking a link in Outlook Express no longer works.

Here's the first thing to try:Set Internet Explorer as the default browser

To set Internet Explorer to be the default Internet Browser, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the Internet or Internet Options icon, and then click Programs.
    3. Make sure that the Internet Explorer should check to see if it is the default check box is selected, click Apply, and then click OK.
    4. Open Internet Explorer, and then click Yes when you receive the following prompt:

Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Do you wish to make it the default?

    5-25-2009 8-19-26 AM

Links in e-mail messages should then open Internet Explorer.

Also re-register the following dll files.

    Click Start / Run / regsvr32 urlmon.dll
If that single change does not resolve the problem, repeat the process by running the following additional entries:
    regsrv32 Shdocvw.dll
    regsrv32 Msjava.dll
    regsrv32 Actxprxy.dll
    regsrv32 Oleaut32.dll
    regsrv32 Mshtml.dll
    regsrv32 Browseui.dll
    regsrv32 Shell32.dll

How can I Recover Deleted Mails from Outlook Express?

  • Saturday, March 28, 2009

  • People delete their emails to avoid increasing the size of their Outlook Express Inbox, later they realize that they have deleted some important emails for which they do not have a backup. If you find yourself in this situation, don’t worry, there is a way to recover those deleted Outlook Express emails. The major security threat to any mail storage files is data loss. The general loss of emails could be due to virus, system format, and accidental deletion of email

The .dbx and .mbx files are used by Outlook Express for storing files. Each mailbox in Outlook Express has its own file with the extension of .dbx (like inbox.dbx, drafts.dbx etc), and all emails from a given mailbox are kept in that one file. Together these are saved in a folder named as store folder which is located deep inside "Documents and Settings" folder.

When a Microsoft Outlook Express user deletes an email, the process usually involves sending the message to the "deleted items" folder, and then selecting the option to "empty the deleted items folder". Once this has been done, a deleted email is no longermsoe1 accessible. When emails are deleted they are not removed from the mailbox (.dbx) file, actually the emails are still inside the dbx file as free space. Outlook Express tries to remove these deleted emails physically from time to time using its “Compact” feature. Compact option, removes the deleted files, which in turn will speed-up the Outlook Express performance.File compacting is controlled in Outlook Express under the "File / Folders menu". If your DBX files have been compacted then any deleted messages they contain have been permanently erased and are no longer recoverable

You may be able to see these e-mails if:
    1. They were just recently deleted.
    2. Outlook express has not compacted the folder yet.It won't hurt to try this.

    1. Do a search for *.dbx
    2. Find the Deleted Items.dbx in the results folder.
    3. Right click this folder.
    4. Choose Open With and then choose Wordpad.(highlight the file, hold down the shift key, right click and get the menu to show up...and let go of the shift key)
    5. Make sure you REMOVE the tick in the 'Always use this program to open this file' dialog
    6. Most of the results will be garbage but if you scroll close to the end of the display you may be able to view some of the emails that have been deleted but not compacted
