The Worldwide Web ("WWW" or simply the "Web") is a global information medium which users can read and write via computers connected to the Internet.In March 1989, Tim Berners-Lee proposed a revolutionary new system for sharing information, and unwittingly changed the world forever; World Wide Web(WWW) .Today the European Organisation for Nuclear Research will celebrate the 20th birthday of the worldwide web.

Microsoft’s “Elevate America” Program
Microsoft has always offered training resources for consumers. According to a press release, they want to train 2 million people in basic tech skills. This is part of a 3-year initiative called “Elevate America”. The Elevate America program comes in two parts. One is aimed at helping helping people get free technical training and certification, and is more formal in nature. The other is available online and is aimed at teaching simpler skills, such as writing email and using the internet.
The portal offers 5 online classes in two different versions. These include:
- Computer Basics
- The Internet and the World Wide Web
- Productivity Programs
- Computer Security and Privacy
- Digital Lifestyles
1. With Internet Explorer, navigate to http://www.microsoft.com/elevateamerica.
2. Scroll to the bottom and click the Get Started Now button under the Get the Basics block. This will redirect you to the Digital Literacy Home page.
3. Scroll to the bottom of the Digital Literacy home page and select your language and click Go.
4. On the next page, choose the curriculum version you need. Courses are the same; it’s just the screen shots and steps that differ.
5. Make a course selection.
Although these are considered “online courses”, you can download them to your PC. This might be handy if you’re heading someplace that has slow internet access.

Operating System & Other Application’s Market Share
Here are some interesting statics from Web analytics vendor Net Applications.In the system market share report, the OS analysis shows Windows Vista share is 21.12 percent, almost double the figure from a year ago. Still, 65 percent of PC users are running Windows XP.
However, there are some other interesting figures in the lists.In the browser segment both Apple Safari and Google’s Chrome browsers showed gains, 7.93 and 1.04 percent, respectively.Still leading IE followed by Firefox

XE.com is a free online currency converter.The site provides users with updated foreign exchange values and quick converter that has every currency value enlisted it.The site refreshes after fixed time intervals in order to change the updated conversion values .
Service is extremely user-friendly and fast. All you need, is to select amount, base currency and currency to convert to.
XE.com Currency Converter is a useful Firefox extension which consists of a button that you may add to the Firefox toolbar that uses XE.com to convert any amount from one currency to another. When the button is pressed, you are prompted to enter the amount in the original currency. Then you are prompted to enter the original currency and then the destination currency. It is important that the currencies are entered in 3-character ISO currency codes.

Next Tuesday, the computer mouse turns 40
Invented by a team of researchers led by Doug Engelbart at the Stanford Research Institute in California in 1968, computer’s most dynamic input device, the “mouse”, has entered into its 40s on Tuesday.Just a few years before it became an essential part of the personal computing world.
Engelbart first started making notes for the mouse in 1961, after deciding that he could do better than the standard gadget, a light pen which had been used on radar systems during the Second World War. 'We had a big heavy tracking ball - it was like a cannonball,' he said. 'We had several gadgets that ended up with pivots you could move around. We had a light panel you had to hold up right next to the screen so the computer could see it. And a joystick that you wiggle around to try to steer things.

The first-ever mouse was made from a wooden block with wheels mounted on its base, and featured a red button on top of its case, and a cable at its back, which probably made one of the researchers to nickname it as “mouse”.
The mouse now faces unprecedented competition. Laptops which make no use of a mouse are an increasingly popular alternative to desktop computers for workers on the move. Apple's popular iPhone and Nintendo's Wii have shown the potential for touchscreens and movement sensors. HP is pushing a mouse-less TouchSmart PC. Microsoft has invested millions of dollars in a coffee table-shaped 'Surface' computer which responds to natural hand gestures, touch and physical objects

Onion Map has a great collection of interactive 3D maps of some of the most world’s popular cities.It provides a 3D interactive map of all the major cities across the world.
You can zoom in and out; check out restaurant, shops, and hotel locations; plus find out random facts about a city, such as population, the phone code and the currency.It’s an international map service but it still has a limited amount of cities, although at least they’re all fairly well distributed around the world. Hopefully more cities will be added in time to cover more destinations.

YouTube To Broadcast Beijing Olympics
The International Olympic Committee has launched a YouTube channel to broadcast clips from the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games that will be accessible in most countries, but not in the United States.
The IOC announced Monday that a selection of clips will air in 77 countries -- in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East -- beginning Wednesday. Viewers can watch the clips on demand where digital video-on-demand rights have not been sold or acquired for exclusive airing. General Electric's NBC conglomerate has secured the broadcast rights for the Olympics in the United States.
The IOC said that its broadcasting services would regularly provide updated content, including highlights, news, and daily clips during the 17 days the games are held. The content will be geo-blocked in each territory.

Google Launches Knol, A Unit of Knowledge
The web contains an enormous amount of information, and Google has helped to make that information more easily accessible by providing pretty good search facilities. But not everything is written nor is everything well organized to make it easily discoverable.There are millions of people who possess useful knowledge that they would love to share, and there are billions of people who can benefit from it
“knol” is a free tool to encourage people who know a particular subject to write an authoritative article about it. The tool is still in development and this is just the first phase of testing.A knol on a particular topic is meant to be the first thing someone who searches for this topic for the first time will want to read.
Google says that it will allow multiple people to create Knols on the same subject. Knol allows users to rate and review Knols, and will likely include ranking as part of search results so we don’t have to sift through countless articles on the same topics. Each article is referred to as a “knol.” Authors of the knols can take credit for their writing, provide credentials, and elicit peer reviews and comments. Readers can provide feedback, comments, related information.

Microsoft launches Vista Compatibility Center!
The Vista Compatibility Center, launched Tuesday at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference In Houston, is designed to let PC users verify whether their systems, peripherals, and applications will work properly with Microsoft's most current operating system.
Microsoft still feels that they need to get people to check for Vista compatibility in case they wish to upgrade from Windows XP."Through this new compatibility tool, Microsoft will work to solicit continuous feedback from consumers and partners to ensure that their purchase and adoption experience remains positive long after their migration to Windows Vista," the company said in a statement.
The idea was to offer a Web site where consumers and small businesses could easily check whether their hardware and software are Vista-ready. Since yesterday afternoon, however, the site has greeted visitors with the message "The Windows Vista Compatibility Center will be launching soon, please check back!"
